In January, a team of nine students from Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management won third place in the 18th annual Deloitte FanTAXtic Tax Case Competition.
The competition began with 72 teams from over 40 colleges and universities across the country. Two teams from Syracuse University competed at the regional event at Deloitte’s office in Boston, Massachusetts from November 9-10, 2019. Ginger Wagner, professor of accounting practice at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management, worked with the teams as faculty advisor.
Students Zach Plutchok (senior), Robert Roth (junior), Jaia Benson, Meghan Cherry, and Emily Woodilla (sophomores) won the regional contest and qualified for the national competition. The event was held at Deloitte University, Deloitte’s campus for learning and leadership development, near Dallas, Texas from January 18-20, 2019.
Deloitte FanTAXtic, sponsored by Deloitte Tax LLP and supported by the Deloitte Foundation, is designed to help educate and prepare the next generation of business professionals. The competition encompasses an interactive program consisting of case simulations, role-playing, and presentations designed to provide students with insights and perspectives on the overall challenges, changes in the marketplace, and future trends of business and tax. Throughout the competition, professionals from Deloitte participate in the event by offering support and guidance for the students competing.
Syracuse University students competed with eight other teams in solving a complex business tax case and presenting their analysis to a panel of live, virtual judges. The team ranked third place in the national competition, with University of Illinois- Chicago ranking second and Indiana University ranking first. Other teams that participated came from Fordham University, University of Nebraska, North Carolina State University, University of Northern Iowa, Texas A&M University, and University of Utah.
Prior to joining the Whitman School, Julia worked several jobs in service and hospitality, from working as a barista to bartending. Julia enjoys creating through writing blog content and poetry, photography, and other outlets.
