One of the organizations we were able to visit, while on the ground in Nairobi, was the Mwelu Foundation. The Mwelu Foundation is a registered trust, founded in 2007. They work with a group of approximately 80 young people to help them realize their potential through photography, film production and building of life skills.
Our team had the pleasure of meeting Julius Mwelu, born-and-raised Mathare resident and creator of the Mwelu Foundation, over dinner towards the latter half of our trip. Julius shared his remarkable story of growing up in an informal community and overcoming obstacles to lead a successful and healthy life. Most impressively, he shared why he went back to the underprivileged community he came from and continues to try to empower others within it.
