As a dual major in Whitman and Newhouse studying marketing and television, radio and film, Sarah Arlotto wanted to combine her interest in television with her knowledge of business. When she landed an internship at Discovery Communications last summer in TLC’s advertising sales department, Sarah quickly found that this role perfectly matched her interests and skills. She now hopes to pursue a career in advertising working in New York City after graduation.

At Whitman, Sarah is involved as a peer mentor for the IMPRESS program in Waverly house. Before the program was put in place, she served as a peer facilitator during her sophomore and junior year. “I love being able to help younger students adjust to college life and their classes at Whitman,” Sarah explained. She is also a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, where she has held positions as the photography chair and the academic chair.

During the college search process, Sarah initially was attracted to Syracuse because of the college atmosphere, sports culture and beautiful campus. Upon her arrival, she chose to major in Whitman because she felt that a business background would benefit her in her future career. Over the course of her education, Sarah feels like the skills she has acquired—not only in marketing, but also in areas like finance and accounting—have been extremely helpful in making her a well-rounded young professional.

For Sarah, one of the most beneficial aspects of her Whitman education has been the help that faculty at the career center and advising office have provided. “People in both offices have gone out of their way to help me when I have had trouble scheduling my classes or need to edit my resume for a job application at the last minute,” she said. “The attention that Whitman provides to its students is so unique and is a big part of why I think Whitman is such a great school.”
