Growing up in Miami Florida Bijou found herself constantly being exposed the many cultures of the world. Being Haitian American and living in Miami she was able to stay true to her Caribbean roots while also exploring the ways of the other neighboring islands. Cuban food was never more than a couple of blocks away and the possibility to learn about another country’s traditions was always right around the corner.
It was through her involvement in the multiple communities around Miami that her love for volunteering developed. During high school her time was spent between the Little Haiti Cultural Center and the nearby Jewish Community Center. In the Little Haiti Cultural Center she found ways to not only teach young kids about sportsmanship but learn from them the value of happiness. As an avid tennis player, Bijou continued her love of the sport by being an instructor at the JCC while also teaching children about the fundamentals of the game.
Volunteer work is something she hopes to never lose. After completing her freshman year at Syracuse her organizations are the epitome of a volunteer. She became involved in Orange Seeds, a first year and transfer program and Alpha Phi Omega. She strives to continue these efforts and bring more service to the Syracuse University Campus.
In Whitman she is the Vice President on the American Marketing Association, gaining experience and hands on work in what she hopes to continue in the future. As she enters her sophomore year she is excited to continue her marketing and global economy class and to see where her volunteering takes her. Bijou is another outstanding #WhitmanWatch student.
