I’m back and this time to talk about some of the opportunities I’ve had here. One of the biggest things students do at SU, and especially in Whitman, is study abroad. No matter what your requirements are, Whitman makes it easy to go abroad. I went to Sydney through SU’s World Partner program and lived in an apartment with an ocean view. Beyond hang-gliding through New Zealand, I really did learn a lot. Going abroad is highly encouraged, and I’m so happy I spent a semester meeting new people, learning new things. And it made coming back to SU even better!
My most formative activity has been working at The Daily Orange, SU’s award-winning student-run newspaper. I worked in the feature section, then as managing editor, and am now strengthening our digital presence. When I was managing editor, I spent nearly 60 hours a week working. It’s been a great way to forge relationships, get journalism experience, and since The D.O. is independent, I thought financially about our paper as well.
I’m also a huge fan of Syracuse basketball (like most people). My friends and I camped out for three days during SU vs. Villanova in 2010, when SU set an on-campus record for highest attendance ever. The spirit at Syracuse is contagious, and everyone has so much pride in being orange – especially alumni. I’ve met great alumni who are leaders in their fields (the president of ABC-daytime is really nice!). Just a few weeks ago I was able to have lunch with the CEO of Walmart-India, who spoke at Whitman. I was also in NYC a week later where I meet with the Editor-at-Large at Bloomberg– also an SU alumnus!
I’ve had a ton of other awesome experiences here, so don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all. Email me at email@example.com.
