Summer Internship

Hello from San Antonio, Texas!  My name is Laura Reidel and I will be starting my 2nd year of the MBA program this fall.  I’ll be updating you throughout the summer on how my internship is going, but first here’s a little background information about me.  I’m from the Chicago area and I attended the University of Illinois for my undergraduate degree in finance.  After graduating, I worked for Quill.com, an office supply company owned by Staples, as a financial analyst for four years.  I always knew an MBA would be in my future, so when I had the opportunity to go back to school full-time at SU, I eagerly accepted the offer!  I’m concentrating in supply chain management, and I can’t believe how quickly the first year flew by.

This summer I’m spending ten weeks here in San Antonio interning with USAA (United Services Automobile Association).  USAA is a financial services company whose mission is to provide financial security to members of the military and their families.  The company began 90 years ago in 1922 when 25 Army officers were unable to get auto insurance and decided to insure each other’s vehicles themselves.  After just a few weeks here, it has become very clear to me that the four founding values of service, loyalty, honesty, and integrity still hold true in what over 20,000 employees do every day.  For the past three years (2010-2012), USAA has earned a spot on Fortune’s list of the 100 best companies to work for.  I am working with the Instructional Design and Development team, and my first project is part of an ongoing process improvement effort.  I’ve already learned so much in my short time here.

I arrived in San Antonio on Memorial Day weekend after a 29 hour, 1,800 mile drive across the country from Syracuse.  Having never visited the area or lived in Texas before, I’m trying to take advantage of my time on the weekends to do some exploring.  My parents flew in from Chicago to visit so we went downtown to see the Riverwalk, the Alamo, and San Fernando’s Cathedral.  I’m also hoping to try out as many of the local restaurants as I can while I’m here!

That’s it for now, stay tuned for my update in July!
