Name: Steven Winschel Jr.
Graduation Year: 2018
Major(s)/Minor(s): Management and Finance
Hometown: Manlius, N.Y.
Steven Winschel ’18 was able to complete his degree at Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management in just three years; he is passionate about finance and intends to stay engaged in the field for many years to come.
“Before even obtaining my college degree, I’d already written a business plan, executed a financial analysis of a company’s spending and helped over 100 of my peers with their personal financial plans,” explained Winschel.
During his time at the Whitman School, Winschel expanded his knowledge through rigorous coursework and completed numerous internships, which included working as a financial services representative for Northwestern Mutual. Winschel also became one of the first smart money coaches with the Office of Financial Literacy at Syracuse University. Through these experiences and experiential learning opportunities, he was able to apply the concepts that were taught in the classroom to real-world problems, specifically in the fields of financial management and wealth management.
Of the many things to which Winschel feels grateful to his time in Whitman, the growth he has seen in his communication skills is at the top of his list.
“Whitman has helped me develop my presentations skills, my ability to sell myself, and speak with intelligence and purpose,” he noted. “Though it may seem simple, in my opinion, this may be the most important skill to have entering into the job market and beyond.”
Winschel is ultimately looking for a career in financial management and looks forward to giving back to Whitman so that students can have the same great opportunities he was afforded for years to come.
