London’s Creative Industries, Exploring the City

When you think of studying abroad, one of the first things that come to mind is traveling. Don’t get me wrong, I am very excited about the trips we have planned, however, the classes that are offered while abroad are even more exciting. I have received the opportunity to take classes that I would never have had the chance to take had I not come to London.

It has been about four weeks of classes and one of my most intriguing classes has been my CRS 300 – London’s Creative Industries class. Being enrolled in this class has been very special because I have had the opportunity to experience the title of the class firsthand: London’s Creative Industries. Aspects of the class get us out in the city experiencing the topics that we are learning about. For instance, we had a lecture about the concept of cultural capital and then got to visit the British Library to experience the concept. This was one of the most unique places we could have spoken about this topic, and it made the experience much more enriching.

This class has also introduced me to new guest speakers who have been living and working in London for their careers. This week, I have the pleasure of hearing Michael Punter, a playwright, come and speak to us about his experiences of writing London. I am looking forward to hearing what he has to say about the theater industry in London, and how it may differ from other cities like New York.

This semester could not be better, and I am excited to keep sharing!
