Student Helps Amazon Studios Market New Movies

In this “Internship Experience” blog post series, we will be featuring the profile and thoughts of our students from Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management as they reflect on their internship experience over the last year.

Name: Katie Hageman
Graduation Year: 2022
Majors: Marketing Management (WHIT) / Television, Radio and Film (NEW)
Hometown: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
Internship Company/Title: Amazon Studios – Movies Distribution Intern

Describe your position and some of your daily tasks?

Movies distribution deals with everything involved in getting a movie into the actual movie theater. I tracked competitive releases, updated box office recaps to circulate to internal team members, worked on updating movie databases and analyzed the performance of competitive studios in order to make strategic decisions.

How did you land your internship?

I applied for the position online and was contacted for an initial interview. I was then called back for a second round of interviews where I spoke to two more people and was offered the position for the summer a few days later.

What did you learn from your internship experience?

I learned more than I could have ever imagined. Not only was there so much to understand within the distribution team but there were also other functional areas of Amazon Studios that I didn’t realize even existed. I learned about the logistics of every department, as well as who everyone communicates with, both within Amazon Studios and externally with vendors. I learned a lot about exhibitor marketing which includes getting people to the theater, whether that is with promo items, Q&As with moviemakers or in-theater photobooths and meet and greets. This was an area of marketing I didn’t know much about prior to my internship but ended up really enjoying.

Has your experience changed your plans or career choice when you leave college?

This experience confirmed that I want to be involved in the film industry, specifically focusing on the post-production side of things. I’m still not sure if I want a job more focused on marketing or on film/trailer editing, but the internship helped to narrow down my focus.

How will your internship experience help you after graduation?

I met a lot of successful, inspirational people during my time at Amazon Studios who will be great resources for me in the future.

How has the Whitman School prepared you for your internship?

Whitman has always encouraged me to ask questions to understand everything and have clarity in decision-making. Skills such as teamwork and professional communication prepared me for my summer internship.

What did you enjoy most about your experience?

I loved that my work was making a difference. My team valued my input and even executed some of the in-theater marketing ideas I had throughout the summer. It felt great to be a respected member of such an incredible team and feel like the work I was doing was meaningful.

Do you have any advice for students who are looking for an internship?

Apply everywhere you can and don’t be discouraged. Being selected for an internship is a long and challenging process. Once you find the right place for you, make the absolute most of it. Ask questions about everything and talk to as many people as you can to understand what kind of careers are out there.
