Describe your position and some of your daily tasks?
My position was marketing intern in this co-op program. My main tasks mainly focused on coordinating the marketing strategies, conducting business operations and building newsletters for a startup. I also developed, expanded and maintained the marketing channels of the startup to enhance product-market fit.
How did you land your internship?
My department chair referred me to this position. I passed the interview with the staff in Syracuse University’s Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering.
What did you learn from your internship experience?
First and foremost, I learned how to build the marketing channels and make marketing strategies for a startup from total scratch. I never worked for a startup before, it was such an exciting journey. Second, I improved a lot in how to compose newsletters for a company. You had to engage more customers by using creative copies and target the right audience. And the most precious gaining was how to communicate with others effectively. Collaboration is more important than anything.
Has your experience changed your plans or career choice when you leave graduate school?
In fact, it made me feel more determined to be a digital marketing specialist after I leave graduate school.
How will your internship experience help you after graduation?
This experience equipped me with real business-world skills. It helped me get more familiar with marketing strategies and advertising operations. Based on what I gained in this internship, I have the confidence that I can launch my career more smoothly after graduation.
How has the Whitman School prepared you for your internship?
I learned a lot of classic theory and pragmatic cases during the past year at Whitman School. This experience made me feel more confident and deal with works at ease.
What did you enjoy most about your experience?
I collaborated with many professors and graduate students in various majors during my internship. All of us have different academic backgrounds and characteristics. They enlightened me in many aspects, and I enjoyed the insights exchange with them.
Do you have any advice for students who are looking for an internship?
Be prepared to enter any fast-paced work environment and keep learning. Then when you come across the opportunity, you won’t miss it.
