Dear Whitman Alumni: July Message from Cindie Adams

CindieAdams_185x240Dear Whitman Alumni,

It is hard to believe that Orange Central 2016 will be my third homecoming at Whitman. I have met what must be 1,000 or more alumni, and one thing always holds true…your love for your alma mater. I enjoy hearing stories of life-long friendships forged on the Hill, weddings at Hendrick’s Chapel, Georgetown games in the Dome, the bitter cold of Archbold, Varsity pizza and that epic snowstorm when you needed ski goggles to find your way to class! These experiences and emotional connections are what make the Syracuse bond so strong and one without geographic borders. You’ve probably seen someone wearing that familiar orange with the beloved citrus mascot on almost every trip you’ve ever taken, right?

The reach of SU is indeed far, but every alum knows there’s no place like home. In fact, the theme for this year’s homecoming is “Come Back to Your Happy Place!” I’m looking so forward to seeing many of you back on campus September 15-18.

It is going to be a wonderful weekend of celebrating memories and a great gridiron matchup with the South Florida Bulls. Whitman is pleased to host two events as part of this year’s festivities. On Thursday evening, September 15, we will hold our annual Awards Ceremony and Reception to honor several distinguished alumni and friends of Whitman, including the recipient of the Jonathan J. Holtz Alumni of the Year Award, as well as deserving faculty, staff and students.

We are excited for the return of the Orange Tank business pitch competition on Friday afternoon, September 16. Like last year, we’ll welcome entrants in two categories—alumni and student start-ups—with accomplished alumni judging each competition and larger monetary awards for winners thanks to the generous support of Mark ’83 and Judi ’84 (VPA) Morris. Like last year, we’ll welcome entrants in two categories—alumni and student start-ups—with accomplished alumni judging each competition. There is still time to nominate your business for this year’s competition. Just complete the online nomination form by August 26.

Be sure to reserve your spot for Whitman’s Orange Central 2016 events and any of the events on campus you’d like to attend. Everyone who registers online will receive a complimentary T-shirt. If you have problems registering please let me know and I’ll be happy to assist you. For general SU homecoming details and football ticket information, visit

I hope to meet hundreds more Whitman alumni in September! In the meanwhile, if you haven’t, yet, completed our annual alumni engagement survey, we ask that you please do so at your earliest convenience. It will take just a minute, but your feedback will go along way in our planning efforts. As always, thanks for your support.
