Dear Whitman Alumni: April Message from Cindie Adams

“Not only is giving back important by itself; it is also important to recognize the benefits one receives from others. I was able to attend Syracuse University on the GI Bill. Attendance at Syracuse contributed mightily to my future good fortune. Being able to give back financially, as well as through the sharing of my work and life experiences, is a cornerstone of my philosophy toward philanthropy.”  –Martin J. Whitman ’49, H’08

Each year in April, the Whitman community comes together to honor the altruism and accomplishments of Martin J. Whitman, our school’s naming benefactor. On this day, we recognize his distinguished career in finance and give thanks to he and his wife, Lois, for their tremendous generosity and continued commitment to business education.

The 14th Annual Whitman Day is set for Friday, April 21. The agenda includes a morning finance investment panel featuring Mr. Whitman; Ronnie C. Chan, chairman of Hang Lung Group Limited; and Fernando Diz, professor of finance and director of the Ballentine Institute. The discussion will be moderated by Thomas Brown, partner/director of retirement services for Blue Water Capital Management, LLC. Whitman finance majors and Orange Value Fund students will be in attendance. This access to some of the leading minds in finance is a tremendous opportunity for Whitman’s aspiring business leaders.

Whitman faculty, staff, students, alumni and members of the Syracuse business community will gather in the afternoon for the keynote address by Mr. Chan, and the day will conclude with a Whitman Women in Business panel.

If you live in the Syracuse area, will be in the area or would like to make the trip to campus to celebrate Mr. and Mrs. Whitman and all they’ve done for your beloved alma mater, please email me at We’d love to have you join us on this great day. For all of you alumni who will not be in the building with us, I urge you take a moment on April 21 to think back to your time at Whitman and share in our gratitude for Marty and Lois.
