Alumni of the Week: John Lemmex ’91 MBA

Headshot_2Originally from Canada and with an undergraduate degree in chemistry, I never planned or expected to graduate with an MBA from a top U.S. university. I started my MBA at a local university in Canada but found the rigors of work, family and driving 90 minutes each way to school twice a week to be difficult. I found the distance program at Syracuse to be a great way to learn. I really enjoyed the week of staying on campus and the interaction with the other students from around the world.

While I was doing my MBA, I found a fascination with accounting and finance and took all of such courses offered. It was during this time period that I decided to make a career change to finance and accounting. As I was completing my MBA, I started a professional accounting designation in Canada which took me another couple of years to complete. In the end, I was able to gain my CPA in the United States to cap my educational journey. I credit my Syracuse MBA with my career change and success over the years.

I have moved many times with stops in Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania an additional stop in Europe where we lived for five years near Cologne, Germany. Another personal highlight was becoming fluent and working in a second language. We integrated into the society and enjoyed our new life there. I found the skills I had learned through my educational and work experiences translated easily to the European work environment.

I am very proud of my Syracuse MBA and remember fondly the graduation weekend, and the Syracuse paperweight I received sits on my desk to this day!
