This week’s alumnus, Jessie Chung ’12, is featured in the fall 2016 Whitman magazine in our “Five Under Five” spotlight. This column shares a Q&A with a Whitman alum who graduated from the school within the last five years. We invite you to get to know Jessie Chung, a native of Bayside, New York, who graduated from Syracuse University with a dual degree in marketing management from the Whitman School and public relations from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Chung currently lives in New York City and works for Amazon as a campaign manager. Her position entails extensive data analysis and reporting to manage digital advertising campaigns for the company.
- HOW DO YOU FEEL WHITMAN HELPED PREPARE YOU TO MEET THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF YOUR POSITION?
Whitman’s core and EEE classes have prepared me well with both soft and hard skills. All the hours working on team projects did not go wasted. The business skills that I developed at SU have helped me in multiple facets within my profession, including project management, data analysis and client presentations. More importantly, the skills that I have acquired through Whitman are so versatile and transferable that I know, if I were to change professions, I will be able to do so easily.
- WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CURRENT PROFESSIONAL POSITION?
I enjoy the process of getting to know my customers, how they behave and shape the market trends, to better serve them with advertising. Much of my time is spent on collecting and analyzing data to paint a picture for future strategies.
- WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND AND DE-STRESS?
It is so important to remove yourself from work and nd a healthy way to de-stress! I always try to keep an open mind and try new things. This past year, I started indoor rock-climbing. My favorite part about this sport is you don’t feel like you are actually working out because you’re having so much fun. I also try to travel as much as possible to experience different cultures and see new things.
- IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO GIVE CURRENT WHITMAN STUDENTS?
Four years of college go by very fast, so enjoy every moment! Get out there—make friends and get to know your professors! SU gave me many opportunities and opened up doors to technology, business and communications. I encourage current students to take advantage of the different programs Whitman and SU offer, e.g. the Whitman Career Center and SU Study Abroad. Connect with alums when you graduate. We have so many centers and a presence in different parts of the world! Your Orange pride will only grow stronger after you graduate.
- WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN FIVE YEARS?
I’ve always been fascinated by different cultures and enjoyed working with different people. I would like to relocate and work in Europe for a bit and maybe learn a new language. Having the experience of working abroad could benefit my career as I continue to pursue global marketing.
